Is it too much to wish for restful slumber
To where the nights aren’t spent agonizing
Constant turmoil, churning
Where the worry of what has passed
Is only bested by the worry of what has yet to be
It’s not enough to close the eyes and be content
Thankful that another day is etched in history
Instead
The darkness is studied
As if it holds the answer to vague questions
Eyes constantly in shift, never wanting to rest
Until silence comes over and extends its hand
And for the briefest of moments
Peace
A solemn serenity
And though the questions may not be known
For but that briefest of moments, the answers don’t matter
Until consciousness sharply announces its presence
And the fear returns
